There’s poop on your toothbrush….

Published January 2, 2017 by Stylist&Reviewer

Do you have any idea how gross toothbrushes are? I mean seriously….Let me throw some facts your way….

For instance, want to know just some of the things that are definitely possibly lingering on your bristly little friend?

  • E Coli
When you flush your toilet- (you know, the thing that is usually right next to the sink, where you keep your tooth brushes) that flush effectively aerosolizes all kinds of nasty germs in a 5 to 6 FOOT radius….aaaand deposits bacteria like Escherichia coli, or E. coli, directly onto your toothbrush.
  • Gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis, or infectious diarrhea, is one such illness. “In bathrooms with a toilet attached, [researchers] looked at toothbrushes in normal use between one and three months,” Geisinger says. “At the three-month mark, they found E. coli colonies.Dr. Maria Geisinger, DDS, an assistant professor and periodontist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham had the following lovely tidbits to share; Once E. coli and the other bacteria on this list form colonies, they’re a lot harder to kill because “they start to make an extracellular matrix, which protects them from antimicrobial medicines that you might use in the toothpaste, mouthwash, and even antibiotics,” Geisinger says. “One of the reasons you can’t just take an antibiotic and say ‘oh good, my dental disease is cured’ is because they’re actually in a biofilm.”And that’s not all…..When these bacteria start to mix, they can result in almost a bio-dome effect. Think of the algae at the bottom of a pool….it cannot just be rinsed off with some anti-bacterial liquid…no, it has to be SCRUBBED. That’s because these bacteria mingle together and create their own little extracellular matrix. in fact, complex biofilms can have their own circulatory system!!!!! (seriously guys….they are pretty much having their own little party on your toothbrush, just waiting to get bigger and take over the world.)And of course, I can’t forget to tell you some of the other yuckies that have been found on toothbrushes, such as
  • STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS (yup. That’s the stuff that causes Staph infections…..and are often associated with MRSA!)
  • FOOD DEBRIS Don’t forget, what you had for dinner last night, can be dinner for the bacteria on your tooth brush tonight!
  • LACTOBACILLUS AND PSEUDOMONAS “These are two bacteria that have been associated with pneumonia type infections, particularly in hospital settings” where a patient is on a ventilator, Geisinger says.
  • HSV1 (or) HERPES SIMPLEX TYPE ONE This used to be considered oral herpes, but now up to 50% of genital lesions are caused by HSV1 (instead of HSV2 which was traditionally considered the viral strain responsible for genital herpes)
“The viruses are different than bacteria because they come in little capsules, and they’re not technically alive—they need your cells to replicate. In a patient who has an active herpes outbreak, an oral cold sore, that virus can be retained on the toothbrush up to a week.” Geisinger says.Don’t forget, theres also a chance that you could have lingering germies such as HPV, CANDIDA (Causes yeast infections) and Blood. So, if you’re anything like me, right about now you’re thinking, ‘WHAT?! I thought that my toothbrush was meant to make me healthier, not be planning to kill me!’
It’s ok, calm down, it has no hands, it can’t actually attempt to murder you! (I hope)But having said that, here are two major things that you can do to help battle against the practical biowarfare that you were blissfully ignorant to happening in your own bathroom.

1- Put the seat down BEFORE YOU FLUSH!!!!

2-INVEST in a sanitizing dental care kit!!!

I was lucky enough to be able to ‘test’ this one from #Sterline. Their tag line is #TheBetterBasics and I’ve got to agree. Its a super fancy product at a not so fancy price. The kit includes 3 different brush heads, and all of them are stored in the little ‘box’ on the side of the unit. But what’s awesome about it, is that you close the door of the unit and not only does it store and protect the brush heads, but also runs a 12 minute UV sterilizing cycle! No poop particles in my mouth! 20161205094843dfff5e85fba01091cb2cbd17e10204cc3cc0d68404eb1fe7c173771e4d5b98b7beb93d48-520-520
